NIO Team

Director: Dr. Awais M. Kamboh leads the NUST International Office which is a home for all international students and faculty at NUST. His office also manages partnerships and collaborations with international universities to support student exchanges, faculty mobility and joint research activities.

Dr. Kamboh has a long association with NUST, which started in 1999, when he enrolled for undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering. He was awarded the gold medal for his capstone project. Soon afterwards, NUST sponsored his higher education journey when he proceeded to University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for his MS degree, and then Michigan State University, East Lansing for his PhD, sponsored by NUST/HEC. During his doctoral studies he also spent a year at a technology startup as an integrated circuit designer. He received the best paper award at a prestigious conference in 2010. Dr. Kamboh received his doctorate in 2010 and joined NUST in the faculty of electrical engineering where he continues to teach.

Dr. Kamboh was awarded school’s best researcher award in 2017. His research interests include brain–computer interfaces, mixed-signal integrated circuits, and embedded system designs for biomedical and signal processing applications. He established Pakistan’s first EEG research lab with the support of his collaborators at University of Oldenburg, Germany, and University of Oxford, UK. He has won several national and international research grants, has published several research articles, and supervised graduate students.

During his teaching and research career, Dr. Kamboh has been involved with several universities in various capacities during his career including University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, University of Oxford, UK, University of Jeddah, KSA, Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA, and George Mason University, Fairfax, USA.

Dr. Kamboh strongly believes that cultural and linguistic diversity at a university create multifaceted impact, for not just the students but also for the teachers. Leading the NUST International Office team, he aims to make NUST a top destination for students and faculty to come from all over the world to gain and impart quality education. His vision of quality education is to provide intercultural experience along with knowledge, to enrich personal development and shape culturally responsive teachers and students.

Deputy Director International Student Support & Mobility (ISS&M): Mr. Zafar Abbas Naqvi holds BA (Hons) Business Studies specializing in International Business and Masters in Business Administration in Marketing Management both from Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. Zafar then proceeded to get a MSc in Management Consultancy from University of Wales, UK. His MS thesis dissertation focused on contingency planning for corporations. Prior to joining National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Zafar has worked for Edexcel Pearson UK as Examiner and as International Manager for BPP University UK. His last assignment before joining NUST was as Manager Experiential Learning Programs at NUTECH, Pakistan. In his current role as Deputy Director International Student Support & Mobility, Zafar provides administrative supervision and oversight for international student services and mobility programs, as well as act as a first point of contact in getting students in touch with particular NUST administrative office or a focal person at an institution. He aims to make the international students’ study experience at NUST as smooth and memorable as possible, offering help at every stage.

Dr. Aisha Jalil is the Deputy Director International Strategies and Partnerships (IS&P), NUST International Office, National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST). She has been Charles Wallace Trust Pakistan Fellow (2023-24) at the LSE South Asia Centre, London. The working paper for London School of Economics and Political Science focused on the legal status of the women’s right of inheritance in Pakistan.

Driven by a profound curiosity about the intricacies of human relationships and societal structures, she pursued her passion for the social sciences, culminating in a PhD in Sociology from the University of the Punjab in January 2018. Her doctoral dissertation reflected on the doctor-patient interaction in the diabetes mellitus outpatient clinics in public hospitals of Pakistan. She has authored twenty-two research articles published in internationally recognized peer reviewed journals including BMC Health Services Research, BMC Public Health and International Journal of Methodology: Quality and Quantity. Her areas of research interest diversely include: health services evaluation, reproductive health, social inequality, transnational migration, youth cultures, and violence against women and children. Additionally, she had been serving as a peer reviewer for several international impact factor journals including BMC Health Services Research and Frontiers of Psychology.

Previously, she has served as the Founding Head of Department and Associate Professor, Department of Sociology; Head of Department for the School of Integrated Social Sciences at the University of Lahore and Former Founding Head of Department and Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology at Mirpur University of Sciences and Technology (MUST), Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Prior to the award of PhD degree, she also served as Lecturer at Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore. She remained a position holder in BA (Honors) Sociology & Cultural Studies; and MPhil Sociology from the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, University of the Punjab. She has been awarded with HEC Indigenous Scholar (2013-17), HEC IPFP Assistant Professor (2018-2019), HEC SRGP (2018-19) and HEC Approved Supervisor for terms [2018-21] and re-evaluated for [2021-24]. Besides, she served as domain expert of sociology for the public university recruitments for BPS17, 18 and 19 appointments. Regarding the courses, she taught advanced research methodology, sociology and anthropology in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

Deputy Manager International Strategy & Partnerships (IS&P) : Mr. Uzair Hashmi possesses a dynamic academic background, having completed an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters in Nanomedicine focusing in Drug Delivery from prestigious institutions including The University of Paris (France), University of Angers (France), University of Pavia (Italy), University of Patras (Greece), and the Technical University of Denmark. Mr. Uzair is a holds professional certification in Project Management from Google and is certified specialist in entrepreneurship from University of Maryland. He’s also proud NUST alum, having completed his B.S (Hons) from NUST.

With over 5 years of experience working with organizations in Pakistan, Denmark, and Italy, he’s a seasoned professional in the international arena. As the Deputy Manager of International Strategy & Partnerships at NUST, Uzair plays a pivotal role in enhancing the university’s global presence and impact. He is responsible for conducting international visits, managing partnership agreements, and handling collaborations that align with NUST’s mission and values. His expertise in project management and entrepreneurship, coupled with his hands-on approach, ensures that NUST continues to make a positive impact in Pakistan and around the globe through strategic partnerships and collaborations.

When he’s not busy forging international connections, you’ll find Uzair unwinding with action games like Tekken 7, dominating the table tennis table, or talking to the skies with his drone.

Assistant Manager International Recruitment & Marketing Strategies (IR & MS) : Mr. Umair Abdul Aziz is a marketing professional with a flair for strategy and a passion for connecting people across borders. With a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fauji Foundation University and a Masters in Business Administration in Marketing from Bahria University Islamabad, Umair combines creative thinking with analytical skills to make an impact.
At the NUST International Office, Umair takes the lead in crafting innovative marketing strategies—both digital and traditional—to showcase NUST on the global stage. Whether it’s a social media campaign, strategy to partner with potential recruiters from around the globe, or a recruitment plan, he is dedicated to increasing NUST’s visibility and attracting students from around the world.
But Umair’s role doesn’t stop at strategies and plans; he’s also a guide and a problem-solver for international students. From the moment they express interest in studying at NUST to the day they step onto campus to begin their degrees, Umair is there to support them every step of the way.

Assistant Manager International Student Support & Mobility (ISS&M): Ms. Aleena Sohail is an experienced professional dedicated to enhancing the international student experience at NUST. She holds an LLB from the University of London and an LLM from SOAS, University of London, specializing in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law. Aleena brings a unique blend of legal expertise and administrative acumen to her role at the NUST International Office.
As the Assistant Manager of International Student Support & Mobility (ISSM) at NUST, Aleena Sohail enhances the international student experience through orientation programs, cultural integration and study abroad initiatives, and personalized academic and pastoral support. She ensures compliance with immigration regulations and promotes diversity and inclusion within the student body.
Aleena is also responsible for reviewing international agreements with various partner universities, including MOUs and student exchange agreements, fostering global collaboration. Her work ensures that NUST offers a supportive, globally competitive environment for its international students.
Beyond her role at NUST, Aleena has a rich background in law, having worked with prestigious organizations such as the Office of the Attorney General for Pakistan and the Law Directorate at GHQ. Her experience extends to teaching legal subjects and conducting impactful research on climate change and human rights.
